Is Air Duct Cleaning a Scam?

.Your time and money are important. Deciding what to spend your money on when it comes to house maintenance isn’t always easy. You want to make sure you’re paying for a service that is helpful and valuable. Cleaning out your air ducts may not seem obvious at first. But it can prove beneficial to your home and your family. But is it really helpful, or is it just a scam by cleaning companies to get more money? Although air duct maintenance has not been proven to increase the health of your home by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), they do confirm the benefits of air duct cleaning under certain circumstances. But is air duct cleaning really a scam?

Vermin Residents

Air ducts make an attractive home for many insects, rodents, and even birds. The dirtier your ducts are, the more attractive they become to pests. Insects and rodents love being able to hide in the small, dark spaces. These spaces can protect them and keep them warm, especially during fall and winter. Birds also love using dust bunnies and stray hairs to build nests that are hidden from predators. If you have seen or suspect rodents, insects, or birds taking up residence in your air ducts, it’s worth the time and money to get them cleaned out.

Signs of Mold

Mold can grow in any part of your house. If it’s in your air ducts, you risk the mold spores spreading to other parts of your home. Mold thrives in wet locations, especially warm or hot ones. If you have a leak near a duct or your A/C or heating components aren’t properly insulated and have condensation, you could have mold in your ducts. Although you won’t be able to spot mold in your air ducts easily, you can usually tell it’s around by the smell. If your home smells musty, consider getting your air ducts checked for mold.

Clogged with Excess Dust and Dirt

Most dirt and dust stick to the surface of the air duct and don’t cause much of a problem. However, the longer that dirt and dust stick there, the more dirt and dust can stick to that, and so on and so forth. Over time, dirt, dust, and other pollutants can build up and clog your air ducts.

When a duct is clogged, there’s a greater chance that the airflow will dislodge dirt and dust, spreading it out into your home’s air. Clogged ducts also require your heating and cooling system to work harder to move the air around. Cleaning your air ducts can save you energy and money on your A/C and heating bills.
