Mattress Cleaning

Your mattress can truly have a direct effect on your health. While the top layers of your mattress might be cleaned regularly and your sheets changed according to all of the recommendations, what about everything that makes its way to the depths of the mattress?

It’s a scary place in there, and studies show that there are a number of things that could actually be making you sick. Suffering from allergies? It might be your mattress. Skin irritations? It might be your mattress!

Now, we’re not saying that every ailment or illness comes from a dirty mattress, but we are saying it can have a direct impact on your health without you even realizing it.

That’s where we come in! Cardinal Carpet Cleaner can help with your mattress. We specialize in mattress cleaning and know how to deep clean and sanitize that mattress.

The Scary Truth About Your Mattress

Dust mites find their way into just about any surface. They can be anywhere in your home – and they really love furniture and mattresses. This is because they feed off of your dead skin cells.

So on one hand, you’re feeding the dust mites and giving them a cozy place to call home. On the other hand, every time you move or plop down on your mattress, you’re pushing everything back up into the air. It’s a lose-lose – until you clean and sanitizes your mattress.

Did you know that dust mites are the most common allergen issue in homes? It’s the dust mites and the waste or feces from those dust mites that really causes people problems.

They get into your mattress, just like they get into carpet, upholstery, pillows, and other furniture. That’s where they find comfy places to live and breed and they get plenty of food. They also produce plenty of waste, which is where the problem really occurs.

Does any of this sound familiar to you?

  • Sneezing
  • Wheezing
  • Coughing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Itching
  • Red
  • Itchy
  • Teary eyes
  • The very air you breathe at home might be filled with more than 100,000 dust mite bodies, with new bodies pushed into the air every single day.
  • 90% of people who suffer from allergies are affected by the dust mite.
  • Your home might have more than 30 million pieces of dust mite feces floating around in the air, a portion of which reside in the mattress you sleep on.

Not every single ailment is necessarily related to dust mites, but in many cases, allergy and asthma problems are directly related.

If that doesn’t encourage you to get your mattress cleaned, check out these frightening statistics.

Clean Bedding Regularly

It is recommended that you clean your sheets at least once a week to help keep dust mites at bay. You need to clean your bedding and pillows regularly as well. The recommendation to change and wash bedding weekly actually refers to all of the following items:

  • Sheets
  • Blankets
  • Pillows
  • Pillowcases
  • Bed covers
  • Dust ruffles
  • Mattress covers

These need to be washed in hot water, which means water that reaches at least 130 degrees Fahrenheit. If for some reason you have bedding that cannot be washed on hot, you should place it in the dryer on high heat for at least 15 minutes.

Every time you wash your bedding, go ahead and grab the vacuum while you have a bare mattress. This is the perfect time to quickly vacuum the mattress and help get rid of some of the loose dirt and debris, as well as some of the dust mites and their waste.

Did you know that you can actually buy mattress protectors and coverings that are designed to prevent dust mites from getting into your mattress? It’s the same for bedding.

Do a little bit of research and find a high-quality cover that works against dust mites and keeps them away from the insides of your mattress

One way to kill off dust mites is to have a relative humidity below 50% in your home. There are different ways to accomplish this, but you could even use something like a desiccant to regulate the humidity on your mattress and bedding.

Borax is a common desiccant that might be worth a try.

You can do everything under the sun, including regular vacuuming and cleaning of bedding, but you still might fight against dust mites. It’s not that you’re doing anything wrong – it’s just that they find their way into everything

So here’s the deal – don’t sweat it! Do all of the things that you can to help keep your mattress and home free of dust mites, and then take advantage of professional cleaning services that can help as well.
